I have never had much luck with growing mums in containers (I think I water them too much) but I have found that they flourish in the ground. I love that after they are established, they are very low maintenance and don't require regular watering or attention. I do pick back any buds that appear before mid-July to encourage bushier growth and cut the plants way back in the early spring, but really that's about it.
Right now we only have a couple of mum plants, but hopefully we can add some more soon. They are one of my favorite flowers!

they're lovely! most i see around here are potted. i don't even attempt them. i go for hardy ones that can stand our texas summers and come back each year - like lantana.

ReplyDeleteThis has been my very first year having mums and I think they're absolutely beautiful. We have yellow ones. I will now have them for all the autumns of the rest of my life :)
ReplyDeleteWe have a circle of maroon and yellow mums around our flag pole and I bought a potted purple mum last week, which I really need to plant soon. Yours are lovely Tammy!

I planted a potted mum once and it did grow...for a bit...then died. I've never tried again, but yours are so lovely I just might try it!

ReplyDeleteI don't, but my mother-in-law does and she LOVES them!! I think they're really pretty. We pick some up this Fall if we make another run to the pumpkin patch (lots for a great deal!).
ReplyDeleteI don't have luck getting mums to come back year after year, so I have to re-plant them if I want them every year. I do love them though - such a lovely bit of color on the ground to compliment the trees!
ReplyDeleteI love my mums, too! I plant my eggplant in front of my mums which begin to blossom just as the eggplant is finished up. It's such a great combination!

ReplyDeleteI love the earthy colors of Mums. You are lucky to get them to grow for you. We are too wet here and the slugs seem to find them very tasty! But I do love them in pots. xo

ReplyDeleteI love mums too--they give me such a "fall-y" feeling. I even love the way the leaves smell. I grow Sheffield Pinks, which do very well in North Florida. . . . Your flowers and photos are just beautiful!

ReplyDeleteGorgeous! One of my favorites, as well! When I lived in Minnesota, I had many in my garden. Since moving to Wisconsin, I have not been able to get them to survive the winter. It isn't any harsher here, so not sure what keeps going wrong, but I took the year off from trying!

ReplyDeleteBut I usually still buy one or two to put in baskets out front each Fall then plant them in the ground around the farm after they finish blooming. It is such fun when they pop up bigger than ever the next year :)
I purchased pots and then totally failed to water them. They were beautiful for about two weeks!
ReplyDeleteI have them from my mom's gardens. They do well in well drained soil and on our south side of our house. The whites and the yellows do tend to take over in the garden though...I never had luck growing your beautiful fuchsia colored one!

ReplyDeleteYes I do but as you say in the pots they don't seem to like at all. I made a mistake by putting my recent one's in large pots, but they seem to be perishing . So thank you , now I know what I should have done Tammy. Enjoy they are so pretty.

ReplyDeleteI am a big fan of oranges and reds together so I am always on the lookout for flowers with that combo (eg orange lilies). I have never heard of mums though. I wonder if they are called something else in the UK?
ReplyDeleteI do like mums, also! But my big time flower in my neck of the woods are Cosmos! They grow very abundantly. They thrive and bloom their pretty pink and white daisy like blooms for weeks and weeks. I also do very well out here on our little prairie with the shasta daisies. I have found that the Wild Flower mixtures seem to do the best for me in my gardens. I love to buy geraniums for containers!! But we had a deep freeze already, so it is all gone now :( But I did bring a big geranium in the house to winter over.

ReplyDeleteI don't grow anything in my garden at all. Even things that I've been told doesn't need much taking care of die with me. I have a brown thumb instead of a green one. Your flowers are beautiful. :)
