This year we have begun to think differently about the landscaping on our property. For the past couple years, David mowed quite a bit of the area around our house. It looked really nice, but he was mowing all the time to try to keep up. This summer we decided to just cut a small area around the house and leave the rest to grow wild. The bees love this, and I love it too because we get lots of colorful wildflowers growing up behind the house. Recently I let the chickens out to free range and Red found her way to the wildflower patch. I had to take some photos because she looked so gorgeous amongst all the flowers!
Of course I would be remiss if I didn't include a full on, glorious fluffy butt shot!
After a while some of the other chickens came over to see what Red was up to, and David came out to see what I was up to. I love seeing my pretty chickens in the wildflowers, but even more I love seeing my handsome sweetheart holding one of our pretty chickens in the wildflowers.
Aren't they just the cutest? I guess I may be a little biased :)

ReplyDeleteWe have to keep the yard mowed so the kids have room to play kickball, and to keep down on ticks (especially deer ticks) which are very bad and getting to be a common danger in our area - a lot of serious tick related illness, much worse than Lymes. However - chickens are great at pest control! It was part of the reason we kept guineas in the past.
That's a wonderful photo of your husband and that gorgeous chicken! I think the tie really makes the photo! (I seem to have a tie thing going on.. when I'm trhifting, I keep collecting more & more wool & vintage ones in hopes my sons will start wearing them more.) :)

ReplyDeleteLove to see your sweet chicken in the wildflowers! We decided the same thing years ago - mowing was taking up lots of time, so now we let the wildflowers grow, too. We only mow an acre now. :) We just have to keep the wild blackberries in check. Very sweet photo of your handsome hubby holding the chicken. xoxo

ReplyDeleteWhat type Hens do you have. We have Orphingtons. We have them in a Chicken Tractor and they get moved around the back yard about twice a week. They are doing a good job of keeping the grass toward the back mowed so Honey Bear only mows near the house and in front. Also, having the taller grass and clover gives the wild rabbits something to eat and a place to hide.

We are thinking of sowing some native Australian wildflowers down our slope that was cleared of lantana. All that popped up to regrow were weeds and some bracken ferns. Do your wildflowers just pop up unseeded? Any weeds?

ReplyDeleteYour hens are so healthy and happy being able to graze for bugs and worms!! You may want to also get some wildflower seeds and throw them out in the yard that you allowed to grow up for a variation of wildflowers. Especially black eyed susans and poppies. Ohhh - and add some clover for your bees.
